Before taking to the track and starting your drive, you will receive an extensive safety briefing from expert instructors which will detail the specific driving rules for the track you are on - as these may differ depending on location and conditions.
Generally speaking, for most Track Days, it's acceptable to overtake only on straight parts of the track and never on approaching corners or bends, but there will be some instances when you can't overtake.
On Track Days, flags are used to communicate this and can be divided into the following:
- Yellow Flag - danger ahead and do not overtake
- Red Flag - there has been a serious incident which means you need to slow down and cannot overtake
- Yellow and Red Stripped Flag - there's debris on the circuit and extra care should be taken
- Blue Flag - there is another car on the track that wants to overtake you
- Black Flag - there's something wrong and you need to slow down and pull over into the pits as soon as it's safe
In short, it's acceptable to overtake on straight sections on the track, but only when the conditions indicate it's okay to do so - which will be communicated to you during the drive.
